A Cup of Ambition
“Pour myself a Cup of Ambition, yawn and stretch and try to come alive.”
Dolly Parton sang those words in the 1980 movie, 9 to 5. This film about three office workers attempting to break the glass ceiling makes a great introduction to this week’s topic, AMBITION.
Ambition is a strong desire to do or to achieve something, typically requiring determination and hard work.
Ambition can ramp up your creativity and innovation. But It can also lead you into dangerous territory. I like Apostle Paul’s ambitious example. It was both great and godly.
12 Not that I have already attained,[c] or am already perfected; but I press on, that I may lay hold of that for which Christ Jesus has also laid hold of me. Philippians 3:12
Apostle Paul described his ambitious energy as “pressing.” He pressed to discover, become, attain and fulfill all that God had in mind when He created him.
Paul’s ambition was godly for two reasons.
- It was fueled by God’s vision. Vision is fuel; without it you’re going nowhere. He had a strong desire to spread the Gospel and build the Kingdom of God.
- It yielded to the direction of the Holy Spirit. See Acts 16 when God prevented Him from preaching in Asia and from going to Bythinia.
If you are a Christ-follower, your ambition should be great and godly. In the coming weeks we’ll explore recognizing and defeating the Enemies of Godly Ambition:
- False Humility
- Fear of People
