Let’s talk about one of my favorite words, Discipline. O.K. Actually, it’s not one of my favorite words. But it is a word every leader needs to be comfortable with if we’re going to have any type of success and progress.
I’ve developed a definition for discipline that’s helped me crash through some barriers as well as get out of bed in the morning. Here it is. “Discipline is adhering to a pre-set decision made in a low pressure atmosphere.”
Here’s how it works. YOU decide who you’re going to be, what you’re going to do or have. Then you identify what behavior is necessary to get those results. When the time comes to take action, you simply adhere, or stick to, what you’ve already decided.
It’s hard to make an important decision when the pressure is on. My advice, don’t do it. Instead, make important decisions in atmospheres of peace. So when the pressure is on and that theme from Jeopardy starts playing in your head, your mouth gets dry and your hands start sweating, you can say, “No Pressure, the answer is …”
