Rest and Ride
For in six days the Lord made the heavens and the earth, the sea, and all that is in them, and rested the seventh day.Exodus 20:11 (AMP)
I enjoy my work. When I’m not working for my employer, I’m working on other projects or doing volunteer work for one of the non-profits I love. But lately the Lord has reminded me of the COMMANDMENT of rest. Why would taking a day of rest be one of God’s top 10 commandments?
Rest acknowledges our freedom. When the children of Israel were enslaved in Egypt they got no rest days. When we rest, we demonstrate our partnership with and our faith in God as our source.
Rest recalibrates our values. If everything is important, then let’s face it, nothing is important. There are some things that must be done today, but there are some things that can wait. Wisdom knows the difference.
Rest puts us on God’s agenda. The Amplified Bible says the Sabbath is “set apart for God’s purposes.” (Exodus 20:11) This week, let’s call the Sabbath a delight. When we do, God will make us ride on the high places. (Isaiah 58:13-14)
